Chehwajeong Pavilion was built in 1761 (the 37th year of King Yeongjo’s reign) by Jinsa Lee Minjeok. It was a place where he and his elder brother, Lee Minjeong (pen name: Okbong), deepened their bond of brotherhood. The name Chehwa symbolizes fraternal harmony and affection. On the back of the pavilion’s main signboard is another reading, “Damrakjae,” which is believed to have been written by the renowned Joseon-era painter Kim Hongdo (pen name: Danwon). The pavilion is beautifully complemented by blooming crape-myrtle trees, and a pond with three artificial islands lies in front.
