Andong Jotap-dong Five-Story Brick Pagoda
  • Address
    139, Jotap-ri, Iljik-myeon, Andong-si
Description

This five-story brick pagoda from the Unified Silla period was built using a combination of granite and bricks. From the first roof stone (okgaeseok) upward, the structure is composed of bricks, some of which feature lotus vine (dangchomun) carvings—characteristic of the Unified Silla style. The roof supports are layered in decreasing order from the first story: nine tiers, then eight, seven, six, and finally three. There is no trace of roof tiles having been applied to the roof stones. On the southern face of the second and fourth story bodies (oksinseok), simple shrine-like niches are carved. While the height of the second story and above tapers sharply compared to the first, the gradual reduction ratio from the second story upward gives the pagoda a sense of balance and stability. The uppermost finial (sangnyunbu) has been lost due to damage.
