Andong is called the essence of Confucian scholar spirit, being the core area of Confucian culture. Significantly, based on the Confucian scholar spirit that succeeded the authenticity of the Toegye School, many Confucian scholars struggled to overcome national crises. As a result, Andong became an area where the most Independence Patriots and Suicide Protestors were produced. Gyeongsangbuk-do Independence Movement Memorial was established based on the sacrifice of the patriots in their history. It also performed as an educational place for the 21st national spirit. They teach the history of the independence movement, and people learn about the nature of loving the country.
