This Seowon(Confucian Academy) shrines the most famous Confucian scholar in the Joseon Dynasty, Toegye Lee Hwang. Lee Hwang established Dosanseodang in 1561 (Year 16, King Myeongjong) and devoted himself to academic researches and character-building. After his death, scholars proposed to build a Confucian Academy where Dosanseodang was. In 1572 (Year 5, King Seonjo), they decided to shrine his ancestral plate at Sangdeoksa Temple. They began building the Seowon in 1574 and completed it in 1576. King Seonjo bestowed the signboard of Dosanseowon, which was written by Han Ho, then the most excellent calligrapher. Dosanseowon Confucian is primarily composed of Dosanseodang and Seowon area. The former is where Toegye Lee Hwang used to teach scholars and is the oldest building at Dosanseowon. The structure shows Lee Hwang's practical academic style and frugality well.
