Taesamyo : The history behind Andong
“Land of Peace in the East”

The name “Andong” means “a peaceful land in the East.” During the Later Three Kingdoms period, a decisive battle for unification was fought between Wang Geon and Gyeon Hwon in the Gochang area. Thanks to the help of three local men—Kim Seonpyeong, Gwon Haeng, and Jang Jeongpil—Wang Geon defeated his rival and went on to found the Goryeo dynasty. In gratitude, he renamed the region Andong and granted surnames to the three men, all beginning with “Andong.” Taesamyo enshrines memorial tablets for these three historical figures.
